Here are a few places to find a free meal around the holidays in Mobile

As Christmas approaches, people may be feeling the financial crunch of a big holiday meal and buying gifts for family members.

In fact, the problem with food insecurity in coastal Alabama is widespread: according to the Feeding the Gulf Coast food bank, 65,000 people in Mobile County struggled with food insecurity in 2020, and 27,000 in Baldwin County.

For those struggling with food insecurity, there are a handful of non-profits that provide food assistance around the holidays. While several places have already distributed food for the holidays, below are a few places that will still be giving food away during the holiday weekend.

If you know of any other places distributing meals during the holidays, email mkates@al.com and we’ll add it to this list:

1. Waterfront Rescue Mission, 279 N Washington Ave., Mobile, Alabama; 251-433-1847

The mission will be hosting an open banquet on Friday, Dec. 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The banquet will include a Christian prayer, devotion and worship music. All are welcome; the doors will open at 10 a.m.

2. Salvation Army of Coastal Alabama, 1009 Dauphin St., Mobile, Alabama; 251-438-1625

The Salvation Army will be doing meal distribution on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Families can request up to five meals. The Salvation Army will continue to distribute meals via drive-thru, which it started during the pandemic, but it will also serve meals in-person this year too.

3. Dumas Wesley Community Center, 126 Mobile St., Mobile, Alabama; 251-479-0649

While Dumas Wesley’s food pantry already completed their food distribution, if someone is in an emergency, the community center can make an emergency food distribution during the holidays.

4. Prodisee Pantry, 9315 Spanish Fort Blvd (U.S. Highway 31), Spanish Fort, Alabama; 251-626-1720

Prodisee completed its food distribution earlier this week, and it will be closed for the holidays. However, if there is an emergency, families can call the pantry as the phone will be checked periodically. You must provide photo identification and proof of residence in Baldwin County.
