The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special delivers a surprising revelation about the Star-Lord family

Although Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), and the Guardians of the Galaxy recently appeared in “Thor: Love and Thunder,” it’s been quite a few years since a storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe centered on the rag-tag bunch of misfits.

Thankfully, director James Gunn brought the gang back for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a standalone story that sees Star-Lord struggle with loneliness over the festive period.

But he’s not the only one dealing with emotional issues over the holidays, as Mantis (Bum Klementieff) tries to figure out how to tell Quill that she’s actually his sister.

Yes, the alien empath is associated with the brave hero. This is why she tries to kidnap Kevin Bacon (played by, you guessed it, Kevin Bacon) because she knows the actor means a lot to Quill.

Mantis is clearly concerned about how the news will affect Peter since their father, Ego (Kurt Russell), had intentionally given his mother cancer in the 1970s.

The audience will remember that Ego found Star-Lord in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and explains that he is actually part Celestial. Ego has given birth to thousands of children across the universe in an attempt to control it using the plants that are part of it.

The 2017 sequel also introduces Mantis for the first time, and explains that Ego found her in a “larva state” as an orphan in her home world. Although, fans have speculated for years whether Samawi actually lied to her because he was her father.

Fans are given a definitive answer at the start of the special, with Mantis talking about her secret with Drax because he’s the only one who knows the secret.

There was actually a deleted scene from the 2017 sequel where Mantis talks to Drax about his relationship with Peter, though it was clearly removed so the plot point could be used further.

Even though Disney+ accidentally spoiled the reveal with the “Marvel Legends” episode about Mantis and Drax, it doesn’t diminish the surprise.

While Star-Lord has made himself an adoptive family with the likes of Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax and Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel), it’s nice to know he has a real family member to count on.

The Mantis revelation also means that it is entirely possible that Peter and Mantis may have other siblings somewhere in the universe. Sure, Ego killed many of his children in an effort to spread himself across the galaxy, but who knows how far his rampant reproduction has gone? (Maybe it’s James Gunn).
