“Poor dietary choices can lead to elevations in blood pressure and cholesterol (especially LDL or ‘bad cholesterol’), as well as the development of diabetes—all important risk factors for heart disease and stroke,” says Dr. Enrique Garcia-Sayan, MD, a cardiologist with UTHealth Houston.

When it comes to heart health, diet is important for numerous reasons.

One of the many causes of heart disease is diabetes. Diabetes is usually related to poor diet, being overweight and eating a lot of carbohydrates, Dr. Ahmed Ansari, MD, a cardiologist at Memorial Hermann in Houston, explains. And unfortunately, diabetes is a very strong predictor of heart disease.
