Two pedestrians hit by car after driver has medical emergency
Two pedestrians were seriously injured Friday in downtown San Diego when they were hit by a pickup, the driver of which appeared to have had a “medical issue,” police said.
The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. at the intersection of F and 16th streets when the 44-year-old man and 41-year-old woman were hit. The woman suffered significant neurological damage considered to be life-threatening and the man suffered an open fracture to his left leg, authorities said.
A 36-year-old man driving the truck had a medical issue and appeared to have had a seizure, San Diego police Officer David O’Brien said.
The driver of the truck had just exited state Route 94 when he rear-ended an Audi sedan on F Street near 16th Street, police said. The truck ran into the back of the sedan again before continuing through 16th Street.
Police say that’s when the truck collided with two pedestrians and pinned the woman between the truck and a fence.
“She had to be extricated,” O’Brien said.
All three people were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, O’Brien said.
